OUR ADOPT-A-SPOT PROGRAM
People often take pride in watching their garden grow and bloom into something beautiful. Now there is an exciting opportunity to share that feeling and beauty with everyone while taking pride in your community.
The Adopt-A-Spot program, an undertaking of the Community Pride Committee, originated with the Marystown-Burin Area Chamber of Commerce in 1994. Its aim is to reduce litter and beautify open spaces in the Marystown-Burin area.
Join us in helping keep the Burin Peninsula clean, and beautifying its streets with your own Adopt-A-Spot.
How do you get involved? Well, it’s easy!!!
1) Identify a location: Your may choose a spot in your neighbourhood,
or a spot elsewhere, that you know needs a little TLC.
2) Develop a plan: You can plant trees, bushes, flowers, or a combination of them all. Please consider the cost of materials, maintenance requirements, soil conditions, and water availability when planning. As well, ensure that you are able to maintain the spot you choose by mowing the grass, weeding, and picking up litter when necessary.
3) Get to work: As an Adopt-A-Spot partner, you commit to planting and maintaining your adopted area for four years. It will cost you a one-time fee of $60.00, and in return you will get an Adopt-A-Spot sign with your name, or your company's name, on it.
If you are interested, please contact the Chamber office for an application.
So Why Adopt?
There are many great reasons to get involved. Participation in this program provides a great opportunity for friends, neighbors, organizations, and businesses to work together. It can be a great form of publicity, showcasing a business’s community involvement. Adopting a spot is also a great family summer activity. This initiative provides youth with the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors while contributing to their awareness of our environment. The most important reason for getting involved is to keep our communities clean and create a healthier environment for our families and future generations to enjoy.
How To Adopt Your Spot:
To Adopt-A-Spot, simply fill out an application and choose a spot you wish to adopt, or ask the Adopt-A-Spot Coordinator to recommend a location that is in need of care. The spot can be almost any area that is visible to the public eye from a roadside. We recommend areas close to home or work for easy access to everyone involved. Once your spot has been allocated, you may erect your sign and start cleaning and maintaining your area. Once the initial work is completed, limited effort is required to maintain your spot.
Maintenance Involves:
Picking up litter
Cutting grass (approximately once every 3 weeks)
Planting shrubs, flowers, etc. (optional)
